Weed Riot

A cute turn-based grid-tactics campaign where you play a patch of rogue weeds overrunning a garden. Spread onto new tiles to hit each level's quota, keep weeds alive for two turns so they grow mower-proof deep roots, and read the telegraphed mower, sprinkler, and trowel attacks. Evolve Puffballs and Mother Pods across 12 levels and four gardens, then bring down the Ride-On Mower.

How to play

You are Sprout, a spiky (but adorable) rogue weed. Each turn you get three actions. Tap one of your weeds, then tap a glowing next-door tile to spread a new one onto it (one action). The moment your patch reaches the level's weed quota you win it outright. If you cannot get there this turn, end your turn and the gardener fights back before your next move. The only way to lose is to let them mow down your last weed, which clears the patch and sends you back to retry the plot; there is no turn limit, so a slow clear only costs stars.

🍂
Spread across the soil to hit the quota. Weeds that live long enough grow deep roots (the brown tiles), a fence blocks the way, a compost pile waits on the left, and the mower is telegraphed on the bottom row.
Let it grow deep roots
Any weed that survives two full turns grows deep roots. The mower and the sprinklers cannot touch a deep-rooted weed, so it is your permanent territory: only the trowel (and the boss slam) can dig it out. Keep the tiles you care about alive for two turns and they are locked in — mower-proof for good.

The gardener

Everything the enemy does is telegraphed one turn ahead, so you can read it and spread clear:

The mower cuts a whole row (later, two rows), marked in amber. It cuts weeds and fresh growth, but not deep roots. The row it cuts rotates each turn.
Sprinklers mark columns in blue, then soak them next turn. They also cannot wash out deep roots.
The trowel paints a red target, then digs it next turn. It is the one thing that destroys anything, deep roots included, so spread away from its mark.
🍂
Fences block spreading. Compost piles refund the action you spend to spread onto them, so that move is free, and a fresh pile appears every third turn.

Evolve your patch

Spend actions to turn a basic weed into something stronger:

A Puffball (one action, unlocks in the second garden) can drift two tiles in a line, even floating straight over fences to seed a new bed.
A Mother Pod (two actions, unlocks in the third garden) sprouts a free weed next to her every enemy turn. She is your engine, but only two Mother Pods can bloom at once, so protect them.
Two special moves
Clear the first garden to unlock Growth Spurt (plus two actions, once per level), and reach the third garden to unlock Bark Armor (your patch survives one whole enemy turn unharmed). Save them for the turn that would otherwise wipe you out.

Twelve levels, four gardens

The campaign runs across four gardens of three levels each, getting bigger and meaner as you go:

  • 🌷 Timmy's Flower Box
  • 🥕 Uncle Gary's Veggie Patch
  • 🌹 Granny Rose's Greenhouse
  • 🍄 The Gnome's Perfect Lawn

It ends in a boss fight against the Ride-On Mower (12 HP), which cuts two rows and slams 3x3 zones. There is no quota there: instead, every tile that newly grows deep roots during the enemy phase deals it one point of damage, so bring it to zero. Clear a level in par turns or fewer for three stars. Your stars and unlocked levels are saved in your browser.

Tips

  • Spread wide, not in a clump, so one mower row or sprinkler soak cannot cost you the whole patch.
  • Nurse a few tiles to deep roots early: permanent territory the mower can never take back is how you out-pace the gardener.
  • Read the telegraphs before you commit your last action: amber rows and blue columns tell you exactly where not to be.
  • Get a Mother Pod up as soon as you can and keep her clear of the trowel's marks, since her free sprouts are what win the race.
  • Route your spreads through compost piles to stretch three actions into four.
